Join the I, Scientist conference on 20-21 September 2019 in Berlin to learn more about gender, career paths and networking in science - and to discuss how we can change academia for the better!
Gender. This conference is a response to the obvious gender imbalance in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) fields. We want to increase awareness of structural inequalities that have led to this imbalance as well as provide support and mentorship opportunities for young scientists. In doing so, we hope to not only provide helpful information for navigating the current system but also synthesize ideas for changes that will lead to a better and more inclusive future.
Career Paths. In order to make good decisions about one’s life, it is important to understand the range of possibilities. This is why we want to introduce young scientists to a variety of options in science, industry, and alternative fields. A “speed dating” career fair, in addition to the conference talks, introduces conference attendees to the wide range of career paths available after graduating. This provides a chance to learn more about opportunities beyond academia.
Networking. The conference provides many opportunities for networking with other attendees and speakers as well as company representatives and equal opportunity experts. This is a chance for attendees to seek out mentors (or advisees!) and form communities. Finding mentors who understand your experience and can advise on specific challenges you face can be difficult, so these opportunities are important to the conference.
