In 2009 the University celebrated 100 years since the formation of the first Loughborough Technical Institute, from which it has developed into an internationally recognised centre of excellence with over 3,000 staff and 16,000 students. Loughborough is one of the country’s leading universities having received seven Queen’s Anniversary Prizes and the Times Higher Award for the Best Student Experience for five consecutive years. Nearly half of its income is from research. Overall, it has participated in more than 150 EU projects and has strong links with a wide range of external public and private sector bodies. The research team participating in this project possesses the complementary expertise of engineering, ICT, social sciences, energy technologies and human resources management and is well placed building on its experience from previous EU projects (it has been involved in over 17 EU funded projects), particularly gender-related projects highly relevant to the current one, such as WOMEN-CORE, HELENA and GENDERTIME.
